William was born in the small village of Kilard outside of Blarney on the Old Kerry Pike. Birdie was born in Blarney, County of Cork, Ireland.  They were married in 1922 in the Immaculate Conception Church in Blarney.

William immigrated to the United States on 09/14/1925.
He lived and worked with his brother, Cornelius, in the Bronx.

Birdie immigrated and joined William on 09/27/1926.
She came over on the S.S. Samaria with:
Patrick (3yr 9mos), Cornelius (1yr 8 mos) and Sarah (8 mos).

First settling in the Bronx, Birdie did not like the "close living" and going up and down the stairs with three children in tow.  The family moved to Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.  While visiting William's cousins, Babe and Herbert O'Callahan on Staten Island, Birdie saw the green hills.  She would tell William she would only stay in the United States if they moved to Staten Island because the green hills reminded her of
"The Green Groves of Blarney".
